Longtime assistant state attorney named top prosecutor

Longtime Assistant State Attorney David Smith received the Gene Berry Award at the Florida Prosecution Attorneys Association Conference in Bonita Springs last month. The award was presented to Smith by FPAA President R.J. Larizza. Smith began his career with the Seventh Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office as an intern in 1975, serving St. Johns, Putnam and Volusia counties, and was sworn in as an assistant state attorney in 1978. He has served four administrations.

Roads to close for railroad crossing maintenance

The Florida East Coast Railway is closing the following roads during the month of August at the railroad crossings for maintenance: International Golf Parkway (Aug. 6-8), Lewis Speedway (Aug. 13-15) and Madeore Street (Aug. 15-17). All three roads will be closed to through traffic for the duration of each maintenance project. Detour routes will be posted.

Group to offer child photo, fingerprinting

The nonprofit Missing Children Alert Program will offer a free fingerprint and photo ID program today at the Bealls Outlet, located at Riverside Center off State Road 312, from 1-3 p.m.

County, school board to hold joint meeting

The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will host a joint meeting with the St. Johns County School Board at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the St. Johns County Administration Building, 500 San Sebastian View. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and take possible action on similar interests and issues that affect both boards. County to host budget workshop

In conjunction with the annual budget process, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is hosting a budget workshop at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the St. Johns County Administration Building, 500 San Sebastian View. The purpose of the workshop is to review and discuss the Fiscal Year 2018 recommended budget. The workshop is open to the public and public comment will be heard. City Commission to hold special budget meeting

The St. Augustine City Commission will hold a special meeting on Thursday starting at 2 p.m. for its discussion of the city’s 5-year Capital Improvement Plan. The meeting, open to the public, will be held in The Alcazar Room, City Hall, 75 King St., and will be available for live online viewing at www.CityStAugTV.com.

The meeting’s topic is the city’s plans for capital improvements for the years 2018-2022, a discussion necessary prior to the commission’s consideration of the full budget in meetings scheduled for Aug. 24-25.
